Beginner Mistakes and How To Avoid Them

Updated: Jul 29, 2024

Regardless of how much playing experience you have, you’re still bound to make mistakes in a game of poker. However, players with less experience tend to make more mistakes than their experienced counterparts. You may be making some of the most common mistakes in poker without even realising it. However, with this guide, you can study and avoid simple mistakes at the table.

Beginner Mistakes and How To Avoid Them

Playing Too Many Hands

One simple mistake that most people make when starting out is wanting to be involved in every hand. It seems like a simple task with minimal risk, but it can put you in a world of hurt early on in the session if you are not more selective. Being selective with your hands will allow you to stay in the session longer and give you more opportunities to maximise your chip count. If you try to force yourself into every hand and make something out of nothing, you will lose a lot of chips rather quickly. You may find yourself on a little bit of a run early on which could pull you into more hands, but the likelihood of that remains low. Being more selective with your hand choices allows you to remain in the game longer and maintain a higher bankroll throughout your session.

Playing Too Passive/Aggressive

Another common mistake for beginners is that some will play too passively or be too aggressive at times. If you do not find a solid middle ground, you will either be too passive or too aggressive, which could cost you in both situations throughout a game. Playing overly aggressively could leave you with a small amount of chips if you try to push the table early on in the session. If you can find that perfect middle ground, you will find yourself having plenty more success at the table throughout your session. If you’re aiming to play passive, you will want to avoid raising and putting out bets rather than checking and calling. It is important to play passively at times when you’re trying to trap your opponents or potentially bluff, but you cannot rely on it as a tactic for every opportunity.

Not Utilising Bluffing/Over Utilising Bluffing

Bluffing can be a crucial tool in finding success in poker. However, it is important to utilise it but not rely on it too much throughout a game of poker. If you use it correctly, you can be successful in the long run. There is a fine line when it comes to bluffing as you cannot overuse it, but you cannot underutilise it throughout a session. To avoid this mistake, choose your bluffing spots carefully, and make sure you have a good reason to believe that your opponent will fold. Another key component of bluffing is being able to successfully read your opponents, and that will also lead to success. You will have to find a way to be able to read your opponents correctly, as making a mistake could lead to catastrophic outcomes at the table. #pokertips #pokerbeginner #pokerstrategy #pokermistakes #onlinepoker #pokergame #pokerlife #pokerblog #pokerbet
